In fact, Appalachian music was a real hotbed of early ethnomusicological activity (in the form of "folk song collectors") precisely because what a lot of the early folk song collectors were interested in was tracing the dissemination of English ballads into the new world (this had a racial agenda behind it: it could establish white Appalachia as the true cultural inheritors of Anglo Saxon music making, ans thus as the only true folk music of America).
